Island Adventures

The first camping trip of the new year was an amazing success, with the notable exception of the wild buffalo encounter (detailed below). I successfully connected via 5-stage public transit to a remote spot on an offshore island paradise! The first day I had the whole place to myself; the second and third I was joined by a scant few who shared common interests in peace, quiet, and outdoor adventuring. I love it!

There were three day hikes of approximately 7, 7, and 5 miles, each of which had net elevation gains on the order of 1000-1500'. Nothing crazy, but definitely good exercise, particularly as the trips often involved multiple ridge ascent/descents (so 1000' net could easily be 2000-3000' total up and down). Day kayaking between the numerous shoreline coves is a good option to consider on future visits.

The food rations worked well, and while the carefully engineered cereal gruel did grow a bit tiresome after 2 meals a day for 4 days, I felt great, healthy, and had decent variety with other meals and snacks.

Beautiful coastline, mountain, and even waterfall scenery. Outstanding sunrises, sunsets, and even a little full moon action. In summary, one of my all-time favorite places and trips on Planet Earth!

Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the trip...Aloha!

Saturday hike toward the north end of the island

Looking south along the coast on the return trip

Crashing surf

Saturday sunset over the marsh

Saturday moonrise over palms

Sunday morning at the beach

Nearby waterfall along Sunday's southward coastal hike

The churning cauldron

Blissfully lonely campground
