Great Quote

One of the best quotes I've heard on nature and wilderness in a while, courtesy of Sooyang Park, dedicated naturalist and tracker/photographer of wild Siberian tigers:

"Sometimes I met wild tiger in the forest. They can kill me. They make me humble. When I was humble, I can see nature more deeply. In the city, humankind think they are God. But in the forest, we don't think, we don't feel like that. We are same, with another animal, almost the same I feel."

South Mountain Redux

Returned to South Mountain today with my mom, uncle and cousin. A lot less snow than when we went up earlier this year... in fact less than when I went last week. The views, however, were just about as good...

Thanks to my new SPOT, I automatically got this Google Earth .kmz file of our journey!

Also worth a look, a panorama shot from the summit:

Prehistoric Animals

Visited the new Natural History Museum of Utah this afternoon, and found some interesting creatures...

This is an absolutely horrifying bison with gigantic horns...

...I felt much less threatened by this Saber-Toothed Cat.

Here's kitty, along with a mammoth in the background, and my favorite...a short-faced bear.

Check out the sweet five-toed paws!

Here's a deinosuchus, eating my skull...

...they have protective bones all over their back. I'm thinking prehistoric life was tough.

Here's a nice exhibit with a modern kitty cat...

...and a sobering reminder...

Lake Mountain Petroglyphs

Took a short cruise up the eastern slope of Lake Mountain this afternoon, along the way enjoying some nice views of the Wasatch and exploring ancient Native American petroglyphs - nevermind the target-shooting off in the distance...
