Capital City Wilderness

Rock Creek Park

I was out of town this past week for a conference trip to Baltimore, but nonetheless managed to get a little dose of the outdoors while visiting my longtime friend Adam in Washington, DC. Sunday afternoon we headed over to Rock Creek Park, which dating to 1890 is actually one of the older national parks.

We were treated to an awesome rainshower that offered welcome relief from the hot, humid afternoon. Maya the dog was tromping around in the creek chasing her toy squid, and like myself couldn't be less bothered by the downpour (much like this memorable day at Paseo Miramar). Sadly Maya wasn't particularly cooperative with the photo-taking, but you get the general idea...

It's amazing that even in dense population centers like LA and DC, with a little effort one can find such beautiful, natural places. Even more amazing is the calming, satisfying effect it has on the spirit to be in a place like that, if only for a few moments.

Aloha.
